About Light Her Path

A student-led mission to open doors for blind and visually impaired girls in India.

Our Mission

Light Her Path is a student-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting blind and visually impaired girls in India. We raise funds and awareness for Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh, a residential school in Ahmedabad that has served visually impaired girls since 1954.

At AKPG, girls receive a full education in Braille, learn life skills like cooking and music, and build the confidence and independence to shape their own futures. But access is limited, and the school runs on the generosity of people who believe these girls deserve the same opportunities as anyone else.

That's where we come in. Every dollar Light Her Path raises goes directly to the school, so more girls can access the education, resources, and opportunities they deserve.

One girl, one opportunity, one future at a time.

Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh is a residential school for blind and visually impaired girls in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It began in 1954 with just four girls in a small rented house — today it serves around 200 students.

The girls live on campus year-round, receiving a full education in Braille from nursery through Class VII. For higher studies, they attend local schools and colleges alongside sighted students. Beyond academics, students learn cooking, home management, music, and physiotherapy — the kind of skills that build real independence.

The school is run by dedicated volunteers who became qualified teachers over the years. Most of the families who send their daughters here can't afford private education. For many of these girls, AKPG is their only path to a full life.

Hi, I'm Ashmita. I'm the founder of Light Her Path.

This mission is personal. My grandmother used to teach at Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh, so I grew up hearing about the girls at this school and the incredible work happening there. When I realized how many blind and visually impaired girls in India still don't have access to basic education, I knew I had to do something.

I started Light Her Path on my own with just a lot of passion and a lot of figuring things out along the way. So far, we've raised over $1,200 that has gone directly to the school in Ahmedabad. Every dollar, every fundraiser, every post has been to make sure more girls get the opportunities they deserve.

Light Her Path is now growing into a team of student officers from around the world who all believe in this mission. But at its core, it's still the same idea I started with: every girl deserves a path to her future, and we're here to help light the way.

Thank you for being here.
